A minimum waiting period of 12–18 months after bariatric surgery is recommended before attempting pregnancy to

• allow stabilisation of body weight and
• to allow the correct identification and treatment of any possible nutritional deficiencies that may not be evident during the first months

Women with previous bariatric surgery should be regarded as high risk during pregnancy. In the literature there are multiple reports of marginal ulcers at the site of the gastrojejunal anastomosis following gastric byepass surgery. Gastric bypass surgery should therefore be regarded as a relative contraindication to the prescription of NSAIDs in the postnatal period.
