Retained Placenta 
Excerpts from NICE Guidance on Intrapartum care. 

What is a prolonged Third stage of Labor ?
- 
If it is not completed within- 
30 minutes of the birth with active management  or 
within 60 minutes of the birth with physiological management

NICE Guideline mentions the management of Retained Placenta as follows- 

1. Retained placenta with no excessive bleeding- 
 X Do not use 
- Oxytocic agents routinely. 
- umbilical vein agents

2. Retained placenta with excessive bleeding- Give intravenous oxytocic agents. 

3. Retained placenta + concern about the woman’s condition- 
Offer vaginal examination AFTER ensuring adequate analgesia. 

Do not carry out uterine exploration or manual removal of the placenta without
an anaesthetic
.
